THEORIES AND PHILOSOPHIES

What do I believe?

  1. I believe my students can not only learn from me but their peers as well.

  2. I believe that all students deserve to be respected, treated equally, and loved in my classroom.

  3. I believe my students can’t learn until their other needs have been met.

WHY DO I BELIEVE THIS?

Vygotsky

Vygotsky was known for his work in psychology specifically in children's cognitive development. He believed "Teachers were to encourage leadership in the classroom, collaborative learning, and thoughtful discussions" (Kurt, 2020). This is why I believe in my classroom, my students can learn from their peers as well. There could be a "more knowledgeable other" sitting next to them. Everyone has different experiences that we all can learn form.

Glasser

Glasser came up with the term "choice theory." In this theory it is stated that "all we do is behave." He believed we are driven "by genetic to satisfy five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun." In the choice theory, it is believe that the most important needs are love and belonging. Glasser believes this to be true because being connected with other is the foundation of satisfying other needs. This means the classroom should be a "needs-satisfying place for students" (Lynch, 2016).

Maslow

Maslow was a psychologist and created his "Hierarchy of Needs" pyramids. The bottom two levels are basic needs while, the next two are psychological need, and the very top level is self-fulfillment needs. Maslow believed that students couldn't learn until all of these needs were met. (Desautels, 2014)

HOW WILL THIS LOOK IN MY CLASSROOM?

To encourage learning from their peers, I will rely on group work, peer reviews, and discussions. This will encourage students to lean on one another to complete activities and learn different perspectives. â€‹

Everyone is welcomed warmly into my classroom. I will focus on relationships with my students and their relationships with their peers. I will start class with an icebreaker or a group bonding activity.

I will make sure my students are healthy, happy, and full. I will have snacks for my students, blankets, and do a daily check-in. My students mental and physical health will be the first priority in my classroom
